Antibodies

Page history last edited by Meg 1 yr ago
Antibodies are large glycoproteins produced by B-lymphocytes (plasma cells) of the immune system in higher organisms. A key aspect of host defense, antibodies function by recognizing and binding to foreign invaders, and through interactions with other components of the immune system, orchestrate the destruction and clearance of the invading entity. An organism makes millions of different antibodies which recognize and bind distinct features of the foreign invader. Researchers exploit this amazing recognition system to develop antibody “probes” that selectively bind to epitopes or antigenic determinants of molecules (primarily proteins) of interest.
